ABOUT GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS)
The City of Quinte West GIS Division was created in the spring of 1999. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is the input, storage, manipulation, analysis, reporting, and output of digital spatial data using computers and peripherals.
The GIS Division maintains multiple GIS applications and a wide range of geospatial layers. The GIS Division has developed data sharing agreements with Land Information Ontario (Province of Ontario) for base data and the Ontario Road Network. In 2008, the City worked extensively with Land Information Ontario with the DRAPE project in the acquisition of 20 cm resolution digital aerial photography for the region. 2013 SCOOP imagery is currently in the planning stages and will be collected in the Spring of 2013 and provided to the City by the end of the year.
GIS at the City has grown tremendously from only several users in 1999 to well over 130 staff presently utilizing GIS in all departments. This growth was made possible through a web based GIS application that was launched by the City in November 2005. This same web based GIS technology was used to create the community interactive public GIS that has allowed the public access to geospatial information.
Since 2007, the City of Quinte West has won 3 major awards for its GIS applications, including ESRI's international award of Special Achievement in GIS (SAG).
GIS staff was successful in developing and implementing a GeoConnections Federal GIS funding application in 2008. GeoConnections Funding was used for the further development of the PRISM application. In 2002, GIS staff also was successful with GeoSmart Provincial Funding.
If you wish to see the GIS in action, please visit the City of Quinte West City Hall, 7 Creswell Drive, Trenton, to see the public GIS kiosk, displaying many layers of spatial information or you can access the public web GIS.
The GIS Division accepts requests for specific information such as GIS data, analysis, and hard copy maps. Please call 613-392-2841 to request printed and digital maps. Charges and restrictions will apply.
