Spring Water Awareness

With March Break just around the corner and children looking to venture outside, Lower Trent Conservation (LTC) advises parents that local waterways within the region could become treacherous playgrounds for unwise children.

While the potential dangers presented by rivers, small streams and open ditches never cease to exist, they are particularly apparent at this time of the year. Local waterways fed by excessive rainfall and snowmelt during spring run off can become extremely dangerous. Water currents can be strong and dangerously cold. Ice conditions change daily, becoming thin and weak, and river banks are often slippery.

“Our message is very basic,” says Marilyn Bucholtz, Communications Coordinator for Lower Trent Conservation. “Stay away from water and play safe.”

“Prevention is the key,” Bucholtz adds. “If children learn to recognize the danger areas in their neighbourhood and remember to stay away, accidents won’t happen.”

The public and municipalities are urged to pay close attention to water level bulletins issued by LTC. LTC uses three types of messages depending on the degree of flooding that is anticipated – watershed conditions, advisories and warnings.

    • Watershed Conditions Bulletin- A general notice to raise public awareness that a change in current water levels is possible.

    • Flood Advisory Bulletin - A notice of the potential for flooding to occur in low-lying areas with minor flooding of access roads, backyards and basements possible. Buildings and people are not at risk.

    • Flood Warning Bulletin - A notice that flooding is imminent or occurring. Property damages or risk to public safety is anticipated.

This reminder about water safety is provided as part of LTC’s flood forecasting and warning program. Conservation staff monitor water levels, snow conditions and weather forecasts carefully at this time of year. When flood conditions are anticipated, LTC relays the information immediately to municipalities and the public. Safety reminders are always included.

Quinte West New Strategic Plan

Residents of Quinte West will have the chance to provide their input into a strategic plan that will guide the municipality and help prioritize local initiatives.

“Without a formal strategic plan Quinte West will find it more and more difficult to compete for funding from other levels of government,” said Mayor JohnWilliams. “When other municipalities have clear plans and projects for the future, we can’t be caught short. The goal of this strategic planning process is to ensure that doesn’t happen.”

The community input sessions will provide the public with an opportunity to have their views and perspectives heard on the pressing issues they believe face our municipality now and in the future.  This input will help the Council prioritize the opportunities the community believes the municipality should focus on in the upcoming years including:

    • Balancing infrastructure investments with a strong financial position;

    • Laying the groundwork for jobs and economic prosperity;

    • Tourism opportunities; and

    • Building community identity and pride.

Members of Council, senior staff, representatives from Quinte Economic Development Corporation and CFB Trenton have helped to identify key opportunities and challenges facing the municipality, and to build the framework for the strategic plan and community consultation. The draft strategic plan is expected to be completed and presented to Council in late April or early May.

“The ideas and thoughts of our residents are vitally important in helping us develop the plan. I’m encouraging everyone to participate in the process. This is important to the future of this community and everyone here,” Williams said.

Public meetings have been scheduled for:

March 9: 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. -9 p.m., Multi-Purpose Room, Quinte West City Hall, 7 Creswell Drive, Trenton

March 11:  4 p.m. - 6 p.m. and 7p.m. - 9 p.m., Batawa Community Centre, 81-B Plant Street, Batawa

Residents who cannot attend the public sessions can participate online:

City Looking for Resident Feedback for Downtown Cores

What will bring you to our downtowns?

A residential survey will be distributed to all residents the first week of March through the City’s Economic Development & Revitalization Committee. The information gathered will build upon the revitalization efforts that have already been successfully completed in the downtown core areas.

Responses from the survey will provide valuable information in determining the need and/or desirability for new and expanding businesses. Paul Whitley, Chair of the Economic Development and Revitalization Committee, stated “now that the new streetscape is complete and many existing businesses have new facades, it’s time to capitalize on our investments by drawing new entrepreneurial initiatives to the downtown that will create future prosperity”. Linda Lisle, Economic Development Coordinator noted that “a key objective of the survey is to provide valuable data to assist in developing a downtown commercial recruitment strategy which will be completed in late Spring”.

The residential surveys will be distributed with City tax bills. Surveys also are available on the City website and at City Hall, the Chamber of Commerce Office, the Downtown Business Improvement Office and the Military Family Resource Centre. Completed surveys can be dropped off at any of the above locations.

Hydrant Flushing Schedule

Hydrant flushing ensures proper flows for firefighting as well as insures a fresh water supply to our residences. Sediment in the mains can be stirred up briefly during this process causing dirty water. If this occurs please run your tap until it clears, doing laundry during flushing may cause stains, we recommended that laundry not be done during this period.
